The Risk Manager/Risk Management Counsel is responsible for administering and managing the System’s risk management program. Guides ProHealth Care companies in reducing and/or eliminating financial risk involved in health care operations. Coordinates the Safety Issue reporting system, purchases insurance for ProHealth Care and assists in contract review.

Additionally, the Risk Management Counsel will:
• Assess, coordinate, manage and monitor all liability claims and lawsuits.
• Maintain and coordinate risk containment systems through procurement of insurance and bonds to protect assets.
• Oversee investigation of all serious occurrences and claims, including Serious Safety Events requiring intensive analysis or root cause analysis.
• Chair the Serious Safety Event Committees.
• Maintain a comprehensive occurrence reporting system for analysis of trends and patterns of events.
• Consult with department directors regarding identified risks and implementation of corrective measures.
• Provide guidance on clinical and legal issues, including consent to medical treatment, withdrawing/withholding life sustaining measures, and patient transfers under EMTALA.
• Serve as an active member of the Environment of Care, Quality, Fall/Medication Safety, Compliance, Investigational Review Board, and other committees as appropriate.
• Assist in the education of staff, particularly related to legal issues that may arise in the clinical setting.
• Consult on periodic inspections of the organization to evaluate and minimize liability.
• Interact with medical staff to receive or report risk information issues.

Requirements: A Law degree is strongly preferred. Knowledge of health care is essential (or equivalent training and experience to allow assessment and consulting activities in the clinical setting). Additionally, the role requires at least 5 years of active employment in clinical and risk management settings and demonstrated competence in office automation and other computer assisted office management processes is preferred. Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills are essential as is the knowledge of laws related to hospitals and other health care providers.
